Ateneo has been receiving a lot of flak lately for deciding to push through with its ambitious Olympic-style opening ceremonies for UAAP 74, despite persistent rain showers. Being a personal witness to the event, the claims certainly have basis. However, they seem to do more harm than good, with some comments having little or no semblance of respect at all. Yes, the flag may have absorbed a lot of rain and became soggy; the performances may have been marred by mud or all together a mess; the parade may have been glorious at first but became, later on, a very sorry sight; and the fireworks display may have been really underwhelming (not to mention suffocating), but this is not to say that the University did not try. The event was a daring act; a gamble, to be exact, that Ateneo seem to have lost. A little embarrassing indeed, but not without dignity, not without heart. A lot of people did not see that. An intelligent audience usually tend to criticize, but at the same time they give appreciation and due respect to “good tries”. Bashing without dispensing credit is nothing but crab mentality.
